Weight Loss

Weight problems are caused by three main factors:

– Emotional issues & comfort eating
– Food choices
– Lack of exercise

The only way to successfully reach and keep a healthy weight is to address all three factors together. Hypnotherapy is a powerful ally in holistic weight management, because it can quickly identify and relieve the emotional

issues at the root of the problem, and strengthen your motivation to make better food and exercise choices.

If you are overweight, you have plenty of company. Obesity is the number one public health crisis today, and it also has a high emotional cost for the individual.

According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics:

  • 67% of adults over 20 are overweight, and half of those are classified as obese
  • 18% of adolescents, 15% of children 6-11 years old, and
  • 11% of children, 2-5 years old are overweight
  • Obesity adds an average of $179,000 to an overweight individual’s lifetime healthcare cost
  • It is a major cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, knee and joint injury, stroke, diabetes, and more
  • It shortens the lifespan by 10 to 20 years

Most people think that if you are overweight you just need to go on a diet, but the failure rate of diets is around 95%! The diet industry makes over $50 billion a year, because even if people do succeed in losing weight, they tend to put it right back on, and more…the so-called yo-yo effect.

In order to create any change in your life, you have to provide COMMITMENT. Hypnosis helps you understand the reasons behind your eating, and works with your subconscious to give you support instead of sabotage, and change your internal programming.

Let’s look a little closer at the three factors I mentioned, and why they work together.

Emotional Issues & Comfort Eating

Most people have some kind of an emotional issue underlying their weight problem due to things like stress at work, unhappy relationships, a history of abuse, economic problems, chronic tension and sleep disturbances, repressed issues from the past, or just boredom and seeking pleasure. Whatever the root cause of the problem, hypnosis is one of the fastest ways to get your unconscious mind to identify and reframe that event or situation, and permanently change your belief system about yourself and your relationship with food.

Feeling good about who you are is the core. It is all about commitment to yourself and changing your internal dialogue. Hypnosis is not a magic wand – you have to make the effort of bringing about changes in your life – but when you change your thinking, you can also change your physiology. You may need to take yourself out of the situations causing you stress. You will also need to find new ways to give yourself rewards and pleasures that feed your spirit rather than your body. The ease of visualizing your future in hypnosis shows you the way.

Food Choices

The most important step you can take in this area is to educate yourself about when to eat, what foods are good for you, and what foods wreak havoc in your body. You also need to understand how your blood sugar levels work, so you can keep on an even keel and avoid the starvation response that prevents fat burning. The body is not stupid. If you are not getting the nutrition you need, you won’t get the signals to your brain that turn off your hunger and allow you to burn fat.

There are some general rules that apply to everyone, like avoiding hydrogenated fats, table salt (as opposed to sea salt), refined carbohydrates, refined sugar and artificial sweeteners, and drinking enough water. There are also some specific guidelines that depend on whether you are a Protein, Carb, or Mixed metabolic type.

Exercise

With lifestyles that keep us sitting at a desk, in a car or in front of a computer or TV for most of the day, it’s no wonder we put on weight. Exercise is so vital because that is the only way your lymphatic system can move waste around and out of the body. If you are burning fat, you need to clear out the waste or you will get toxic buildup and your metabolism will slow down, making it harder or impossible to lose weight. Exercise revs up your metabolism and also releases hormones that make you feel good, so you don’t look to food for emotional support.

A recent study of drug addiction by Brookhaven National Labs found that eating stimulates the same pleasure centers in the brain as taking drugs. Food is a learned addiction that becomes a physiological craving. The treatment of any addiction is providing emotional support while finding a benign substitute that releases enough pleasure hormones to get you past the craving.

For most people, two quick walks of fifteen or twenty minutes each day, exercising arms as you walk, is adequate exercise. Step out with a friend, walk your dog, go dancing, walk up and down stairs, avoid using the elevator, walk down to the corner shop instead of driving there, park in the far part of the parking lot and walk, it all adds up.

Goals

I get clients to put down in writing ten reasons why they want to lose weight. I then ask them to set a goal of ‘X’ pounds of weight loss over a specific period of time. The goals should be realistic, appropriate to your body type, and at a moderate but consistent level of weekly weight loss. The more weight you have to lose, the easier it will be at the beginning. As you get closer to your goal, you may plateau for a while, but you will be reaping big health benefits.

Most importantly you need to keep visualizing yourself achieving your slimming goals. Make the commitment that every day or evening for fifteen minutes you will use the self-hypnosis technique that I teach you, or the CD.
